Employer feedback

  • "Sustainable Travel Leave is an obvious way of doing something meaningful, and swapping planes for trains is a really tangible way for staff to do something on a personal level, that the firm can support."

    Bates Wells

  • "At MTR Express we are all about promoting sustainable travel. We know that many people want to travel sustainably but for longer distances the longer travel time becomes a hurdle. There has been a lot of excitement about the scheme among our staff."

  • "For Bennetts Associates, offering Sustainable Travel Leave is a clear signal of our climate leadership, making it explicit both internally and externally that this is a key part of the way we do business. We recently told a recruitment agency about it and they were very excited about it, saying it’s exactly the sort of forward thinking policy that people want."

  • “We’ve chosen to implement Sustainable Travel Leave a sign of our commitment to reducing impact across the whole credit union, as well as directly supporting colleagues to make conscious choices to use more positive alternatives."

  • “Sustainable Travel Leave is a brilliant incentive, empowering and rewarding our staff to embrace slow and sustainable travel. By participating, our team at Imagineerium can actively contribute in reducing their carbon footprint whilst savouring the beauty of the world. We believe the incentive will drive real positive behavioural change.”

  • “We all need holidays and recognise time is precious, so using holiday days to travel responsibly can be a hard decision for people to make. By removing this barrier, we hope to encourage more rail and ferry trips amongst our team, reducing emissions and changing mindsets. Colleagues have already taken trips to Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden and France, and an adventurous trip to the fjords of northern Norway.”

  • “Thanks to STL, employees are more actively seeking out alternative modes of transport and find the other benefits helpful too. The monthly newsletter sparks interest and reminds employees about the scheme. Alternative transport isn't always the most straight forward, so the support and suggestions are welcomed. We love the scheme and wish more companies knew about it!”

Empirical evaluation

Claire Hoolohan, University of Manchester, has conducted an empirical evaluation of Sustainable Travel Leave (formerly known as ‘Climate Perks’).

From the authors’ conclusion:

“Climate Perks is personally transformative for travellers ... The experiences gained while travelling by land help to ... undermine the dominant idea that the vacation experience is best achieved by speeding the transition from the origin to the destination."

"Climate Perks demonstrates the value of positive action to enable sustainable consumption. The findings show how Climate Perks contributes to catalysing and mainstreaming low-carbon travel by enabling people that would not otherwise travel by land to do so."
