What is Sustainable Travel Leave?

Sustainable Travel Leave (STL) enables colleagues to access some extra paid time off work for flight-free long distance journeys. The amount of time you can claim depends on how much extra time was required to travel without flying. Employers can adopt it for either employee leisure travel (holidays) or business travel - and the amount of time you can claim is different for holidays and business trips.

You can read more about how it works or refer to your workplaces’ specific policy for more details.

You can also refer to the FAQs or get in touch with any queries.

A Call For Support

For nearly six years, Sustainable Travel Leave has been powered by grant funding. But the climate crisis is accelerating - and so must we.

To reach the thousands more employers and workers ready to choose low-carbon travel, we need to grow faster than traditional funding allows.

That’s why we introduced a Pay What You Can Afford model for our service and ongoing support for employers and employees - and we’re deeply grateful to every employer who has already committed to supporting us.

Since launching it, 80% of the newest accredited employers have chosen to donate, and their contributions are already having an impact.

Your organisation’s donation would directly help to make low-carbon travel the easy, normal choice for thousands more people - right when it matters most.

As such, we’re asking whether your organisation would consider donating to Possible’s Sustainable Travel Leave Fund?

100% of anything received goes towards:

1) Making sustainable travel more accessible to more people.

2) Providing ongoing support and benefits for employers and their employees who have adopted Sustainable Travel Leave.

Every pound helps us to empower more people to choose clean travel and supports the transition to a zero-carbon society.

  • "Sustainable Travel Leave is an obvious way of doing something meaningful, and swapping planes for trains is a really tangible way for staff to do something on a personal level, that the firm can support."

  • "At MTR Express we are all about promoting sustainable travel. We know that many people want to travel sustainably but for longer distances the longer travel time becomes a hurdle. There has been a lot of excitement about the scheme among our staff."

  • "For Bennetts Associates, offering Sustainable Travel Leave is a clear signal of our climate leadership, making it explicit both internally and externally that this is a key part of the way we do business. We recently told a recruitment agency about it and they were very excited about it, saying it’s exactly the sort of forward thinking policy that people want."

  • “We’ve chosen to implement Sustainable Travel Leave a sign of our commitment to reducing impact across the whole credit union, as well as directly supporting colleagues to make conscious choices to use more positive alternatives."
